Community Service
Florence Nightingale once said, "To whom much is given, much is expected." Winston Churchill echoed this sentiment when he announced, "We make a living by what we do; we make a life by what we give." Margaret Mead agreed with her statement, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it''s the only thing that ever has." Finally, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. told us that, "Everyone can be great because everyone can serve. You don''t have to have a college degree to serve. You don''t even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve . . . you only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
Throughout time and across cultures, our great minds and leaders have concurred about the importance of service to others - and the SVHS National Honor Society embraces these ideals in word and deed. Service is one of the four pillars of NHS that all members must embrace on their quest to be leaders on our campus and in our community. Ms. Hamilton is the primary coordinators for NHS service learning and will continue in this role for the 2009-2010 School Year. As a requirement of their membership in NHS, all students must document a minimum of 25 volunteer hours each year. To assist with meeting this sizable requirement, the NHS sponsors arrange large-group volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
In the 2007-09 school years alone, NHS leaders gave over 4500 hours to essential, local non-profits. Here are some of the organizations to which our NHS chapter has contributed service:
